Warren Miller, the ITS Regulatory Compliance Specialist, shared lessons from his 50 years of experience in the oil and gas pipeline industry and provided guidance for the road ahead during his final Regulation Navigation webinar. Warren plans to retire in October.
During the webinar, Warren gave a recap on the latest industry news, which you can view, along with the rest of the webinar, on our recording
At the conclusion of the webinar, Warren shared his five key takeaways, which are summarized below:
-
Prioritize the training needs for each individual.
Each individual is different with the experience they bring, and the training needs they require will vary based on their background and their generation (Baby Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z., etc.).
Compliance experts protect everyone in the field. It takes reading, studying, and being involved with the industry to stay current.
-
Change in this industry is inevitable.
There will be new regulations, new workforce challenges, new training possibilities, and new tools and machines to learn how to use.
-
Enhance damage prevention by emphasizing training for your company and contractor locators.
Safety can be significantly improved by focusing on ways to improve training on line locating and other tasks that could prevent damage to a pipeline.
Make sure you’re holding people accountable if they can’t do the work.
-
Industry needs to tell its own story to the public.
This is just my opinion, but it sure seems like the oil and gas industry is misunderstood and sometimes misrepresented to the public. It is time that industry leaders get together and make a program to show America just what will go away if oil and gas goes away.
-
Develop strong relationships.
Seek out people who have passion for what they do and do it with integrity, even if they don’t share the same goals. They will become some of the most important relationships in your career.
And beware of burning bridges with a difficult person in this industry. With all of the mergers in the pipeline industry, you may be working together again someday.
